This is a Japanese made Yamaha guitar. It is a signature guitar of the jazz/fusion artist Mike Stern. There are two Tele-style Seymour Duncan single-coil pickups. There is a tone and master volume control, with a three way pickup selector switch. There are 22 frets. It has a Tele-shaped body, made of ash. There is a maple neck and fingerboard.

UTILIZATION

I was surprised that a company that makes jet-skis could pull of a guitar that plays so well. It really does play like a dream, great for both rhythm and lead, and has ton of character. Getting a nice sound is easy, it sounds great even when unplugged. It's not too heavy or anything, and it's easy to carry around and move with onstage. All the drivers on the one I used where stable.

SOUNDS

I like to use this with my twin, but I also don't mind it with a Vox AC30. I think that this guitar would be great for fans of jazz and rock. This isn't particularly good for the twangier stuff, as Mike Stern really doesn't do twang. I like it when I'm trying to play Steely Dan stuff. It really is nice and smooth. I'd say it's comparable to a Tele, but I like the bridge pickup on the Tele better. It's apples and oranges though, to a degree, so it's a matter of taste, I had read many reviews before playing one that had said they thought the opposite. I don't really like it with distortion, I don't like fusion guitar tones and this one reeks of that. I think that most people who are into Mike Stern would go for that though.

OVERALL OPINION

I don't really like the distorted sound. It really is a phenomenal guitar but I don't think it serves my interests for the most part. I'd rather use a Tele or Strat. There's different uses for different guitars, and this one doesn't do it for me. That being said, a lot of players would really like it, as it is a finely-made guitar. It's also less than a grand usually, so I'd say that most people should check it out.
